I have been fortunate to have had a variety of amazing experiences in my life. I met my wife, Susan, over 30 years ago and have had the pleasure of having her at my side through essentially all of my adult life. We were later joined by our two wonderful children, Allison and Zachary, who have grown to impressive young adults. As so much of our being and worth is often defined by what we do for a living, my story will start with my education and career.
My professional career has been intertwined with 15 years of post-high school education. My college life began at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where I double-majored in Biochemistry and Genetics. Following graduation, we moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where I attended the University of Utah and obtained a Ph.D. in Human Genetics. Shortly after defending my thesis, we moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I attended the University of Michigan medical school. For my internship, residency, and fellowship, we moved to Pittsburgh, where I joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for my internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship. On completing my training, we returned to our roots in Wisconsin and practiced medicine first in Green Bay, then in Wausau, and then in Appleton. Practicing medicine in rural Wisconsin has been a rewarding experience involving both acute critical care cardiology in a moderate size referral center as well as outpatient cardiology in remote critical access facilities. I will forever be grateful to all of the wonderful people with whom I have worked and the patients who shared their lives with me. I have been fortunate enough to care for patients in many cities including Rhinelander, Iron River (MI), Medford, Minocqua, Woodruff, Marinette, Shawano, and Wisconsin Rapids, appreciating the nuances of the patients' lives in each city.
As I progressed through my career in adult cardiology, I became increasingly interested in both becoming an entrepreneur while also participating in the business side of medicine. To that end, I recently completed my M.B.A while continuing to practice as a cardiologist. Participating in many clinic and hospital administrative meetings, as well as obtaining my M.B.A., has provided me a perspective of medicine and the changes medicine has gone through. Over the last 40+ years, doctors and others made decisions that changed the path of medicine from a personalized approach to a more impersonal practice of medicine. As my time winds down practicing medicine in Appleton, I look forward to our next big step, taking my clinical practice in a completely new direction after being in traditional medicine for the past 25+ years.
